I’m a 50+ youngster enjoying life.  After 25 years of being a left-brained technical, fact-based person, I am enjoying the creative right side of my grey matter.  I do this 2 ways - journaling/writing about my travels and now sketching images rather than just taking photographs - you remember a place more vividly when your hand records what your eyes see.  Writing and sketching also goes well with my favorite activity - touring by bicycle.  As Hemingway put it, “You have no such accurate remembrance of a country you have driven through, as you gain by riding a bicycle.” (Battle for Paris, 1944), and sketching and writing about my travels with my life partner (see Sandy Larkin) go hand in hand as we travel.

In 2007, I started sketching when I went to a weekend class, “Spirit of the Rough Sketch,” with Sandy and taught by Ken O’Connell at the Sitka Art Center near Lincoln City, OR.  In 2008, we went to Italy with other members of the Top Drawers for 2 weeks of Ken’s excellent tutelage in art and history-filled experience.  Now I look forward to sketching those images that I find to best reflect a moment.
